Description:

"The Climate Toll of War and Peace as Climate Action" at COP 28 delves into the climate impacts of conflict and the fundamental importance of peace for climate action. It will also explore how, fundamentally and practically, climate action creates peace. The discussion will cover topics such as the carbon footprint of military activities and resource exploitation during conflicts in addition to how practices like regenerative agriculture create peace. The discussion will also include the broader implications for global environmental and climate goals.

Raya Salter
Raya Salter, AKA "Climate Auntie" is an energy justice movement attorney, activist, author and the founder and executive director of the Energy Justice Law & Policy Center. She is a member of the New York State Climate Action Council, sits on the board of EESI and the Advisory Board of Evergreen Action.

Raya is an adjunct professor at Cardozo Law School, is widely published on matters of energy regulation and the author of "Energy Justice" (2018).She has over 15 years experience of energy regulatory experience, both in private practice (Dewey & LeBoeuf) and for NGOs, including the NY Renews Coaltion, NRDC and the Environmental Defense Fund.

She is an environmental justice advisor to the House Oversight and Natural Resource Committees and has testified twice before congress. Tamara Lorincz
Tamara Lorincz is a long-time environmentalist, feminist and peace activist. She’s a PhD candidate in Global Governance at the Balsillie School for International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University. Tamara has a Masters in International Politics & Security Studies from the University of Bradford and a Law degree and MBA focussing on environmental law and management from Dalhousie University.

She is the former Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Environmental Network and co-founder of the East Coast Environmental Law Association. Her doctoral research is on the climate and environmental impacts of the military.

Tamara is a member of the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom-Canada. She is also on the advisory committee of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space and the No to NATO Network. She will be attending the climate summit in Dubai with the Canadian civil society delegation

John D. Liu
John D. Liu is a journalist, filmmaker, ecologist whose work documenting the restoration of China’s Loess Plateau has helped to show that it is possible to restore natural ecological systems rather than simply accept their loss.

John is currently Ecosystem Ambassador for the COMMONLAND FOUNDATION which has been pioneering privately invested ecosystem restoration around the world. John also is the founder of the Ecosystem Restoration Camps Movement that has together with many partners created 56 Ecosystem Restoration Camps throughout the world.

John has produced, filmed, written, directed, and presented dozens of films on Environment and Ecology that have aired on the BBC, National Geographic, Discovery, PBS, and other networks. Most of John’s published and broadcast works are collected here. Several of John’s films are featured on Ecoflix.

Amara Enyia
Dr. Amara Enyia is a Strategist and Public Policy Expert on city and state policy as well as international affairs with expertise in Africa, Latin America, and Central Asia. In addition to her role as President of transnational advocacy organization Global Black, she also serves as the Director of Policy & Research for the Movement for Black Lives, Senior Advisor for the Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy at The New School, and as a Strategy Advisor for organizations, companies, political campaigns, and public sector institutions globally.

Carlos Garcia
Carlos Garcia is the Vice President of Impact & Partnership for the Astra Project, a program office designed to launch tactical climate initiatives focused on the most critical levers of climate action. A seasoned professional with 13+ years in the energy and environmental sectors, Carlos has independently influenced key federal legislative changes in the bipartisan infrastructure bill and inflation reduction act. In roles at the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance and Building Decarbonization Coalition, Carlos actively shaped climate policies, facilitated complex discussions, and expanded coalition memberships. A sought-after industry expert, Carlos has delivered keynote speeches at major events such as Reuters, UNFCCC COP, VERGE, and the Renewable Energy Markets Conference.
